On behalf of Servant Partners, we want to publicly express our deep grief over the sickening killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of the police. We particularly want to express our sympathy to his family, who has suffered this unimaginable loss.
If this were the only loss of life due to the abuse of police power, it would be outrageous. But, in fact, it is part of a recent and historic pattern of violence directed against the Black community. We who have lived and served in urban lower-income communities, have witnessed first-hand abuses of power by the police—especially towards people of color and those who are poor. This nation's criminal justice system must use its considerable power with respect for the dignity and human rights of all people.
We join our voices with those lamenting this tragedy, demanding justice, and proclaiming the preciousness of Black life. Servant Partners remains committed to working for more just systems, which affirm the God-given dignity of all people.
In Jesus,
Derek and Lisa Engdahl
